Resize Partition in Server 2008 and Server 2012 is much easier than Server 2003, Windows adds Extend Volume and Shrink Volume in Server Disk management for better hard drive partition managing, and these two options make partitioning really efficiency on new disk. But when you want to redistribute disk space on old disk, they are not the best chose. Why is that?

  1. Extend Volume is not always clickable, on the contrary, it is often greyed out, because after partitioning, we'll allocate free space to partitions, won't let them stay as unallocated. Extend Volume, however, needs continues unallocated space to make itself active. So there's no option but delete D Drive and make D Drive as unallocated space again. Will you do that? Will you delete the whole partition? Backup D partition and delete it and restore D partition again is an option if you have enough time for this, but you are not using a home pc, it's a server system you are using, what will cost you on deleting this partition?
  2. OK, if you insist, D Drive is deleted, and unallocated space is ready for C Drive, but you still can't extend C drive with unallocated space! Wait, check the file system on system partition, it's, ah… FAT32! Extend Volume won't support FAT32, need to convert FAT32 to NTFS, and do it again. That's really a long way to go.
